Sein Weg zum Weltmeistertitel war alles andere als gemütlich, denn am Anfang des Jahres konnte er nicht seine top Leistung abrufen. Erst in Tahiti und auf der Surf Ranch brach das Eis und so schaffte er es bei den Stopps in Frankreich und Portugal auf den dritten Platz. Das katapultierte ihn in die erste Reihe und so hatte er eine solide Führung als er nach Hawaii kam. Wer den gestrigen Tag im Livestream verfolgen konnte, dem war schnell klar, dass sich Gabe die Chance nicht entgehen lassen würde, den Sieg des Contests und vor allem auch den Weltmeistertitel für Brasilien zu holen.

Julian Wilson konnte sich auch ohne den großen Titel über das beste Ergebnis seiner Karriere freuen und wurde zum Runner Up des Jahres gekürt. Im Halbfinale machte er kurzen Prozess mit Kelly Slater und schmiss den King aus dem Rennen.
“I’m so thankful for the incredible waves and the locals for allowing us to surf here. The hopes and dreams of the World Title were there today and it’s been an emotional one. It came down to the final heat of the year and I’m ready to do it again next year. I put my heart out there and gave it my all, but Medina deservedly took the title and I’m so happy for him. Beating Kelly out here in great conditions is no mean feat and I take a lot of confidence from that. I’m so happy to represent my country and do my very best. It wasn’t enough to get the title but it was enough to share a final with the 2018 Champion. I’ll take some time to rest and come back in 2019 fired up for sure.”
