So waren die Damen mit Runde 2 dran und mussten beweisen, dass sie es drauf haben eine Runde weiter zu ziehen. Stephanie Gilmore hatte nach dem verlorenen Heat in Runde 1 wieder zu sich gefunden und konnte sich gegen Sofia Mulanovich durchsetzen. “I feel like I haven’t surfed an event in awhile, it was good to get going in that heat and refreshing to get a win. I was definitely feeling a little sluggish. I’ve had a lot of good things going on between events, but my foot feels fine now. I’m not in the best position for a World Title this year, but I want to put in a good performance.” so Steph nach dem Heat.

Auch die Vorjahressiegerin Lakey Peterson war wieder fit und gewann gegen ihre Freundin Sage Erickson in einem spanneden Heat. So auch die Australierin Laura Enever, die sich gegen die hübsche Malia Manuel durchsetzten konnte. “I don’t even remember that last eight minutes and Malia’s an amazing surfer, I’m just happy I could get a few waves at the end and make it through. I know both Malia and I have a couple of 13ths this year and want to stay in to that top 10 to requalify. I’m happy I could just get a little roll going.” so Laura.

Dann waren die Männer dran, die mit voller Power den Strand zum kochen brachten. Jordy Smith musste sich erst an sein neues Board gewöhnen doch dann war er nicht mehr zu stoppen. Eine 9.17 und 8.17 Wertung sicherten ihm den Einzug in die nächste Runde. “I rode a new board for the first time in that heat and it went well, I think the trick out there is really just catching waves because there aren’t many of them at the moment. You don’t have to do a whole lot out there to get big scores and just have to look like you’re not fighting the wave. Conditions are really tough and I knew I needed a wider board. It ended up working out.” so Jordy.

Bei den Juniors wurden die Viertelfinale Heats schon gesurft und den kleinen Damen die Halbfinale.
